CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
Ethan
Senior Sunrise, 3:35 PM
HE KNOWS.
I stand at the finish line of the obstacle course as if hammered to the spot. I stare at Rainn, the yellow paper in his hand. He blinks down at the letter, and his face falls until his relaxed smile is replaced by bafflement.
When he looks up, his eyes dart all around, as if looking for the source.
Is it my letter? Nataliaâs? Someone elseâs?
My hand shoots into my pocket to be sure the first letter is still in there. It is. Taunting me.
Natalia and I exchange a look. Her eyes are wide with shock. I keep my hands low at my sides, fanning the air slowly. Donât panic. I fixed it with Tanner. I can do it again.
I finally move, but not too fast. I donât want to draw attention. We need to get to him before anyone notices what heâs holding. To explain.
Natalia keeps pace beside me, the panic rolling off her.
Rainn watches us approach, and when I shoot him a desperate look, understanding crosses his face. He may not have details, but now he knows Natalia and I are involved.
I get to him at the same time he tries to covertly push the letter into his pocket. I grab his arm and tug. âHey, man, can we talk?â
He nods and starts walking with me. But in my desperation, I pull on his arm too roughly, and he fumblesâaccidentally dropping the paper in the process.
Janelle turns at that exact moment and watches as it flutters to the sand. âWhatâs that?â she asks.
Akira Kurosawa was the first director to use slow motion as a turning point in his movie Seven Samurai. Somehow, he figured out before anyone else that there are moments in life when time slows down just long enough for you to realize that nothing will be the same once it speeds up again.
Janelle swipes the paper up with her long, fake nails and reads it before any of us can stop her. I have no breath in my body.
âOh my god,â she exclaims. âThis is someoneâs Lion Letter!â
A few people hear her and look over.
She spins on her heels. âClaire!â
Claire walks over, my jacket gone, eyeing me warily.
âYeah?â Claire asks.
âLook at this,â Janelle says gleefully, shoving the paper in Claireâs face. I should grab it and run and save whoever wrote it. But I have to know what Janelle knows first. I have to know exactly how bad this is. I stand behind her, my pulse racing so fast I feel it in my temples, and read the letter quickly over her shoulder.
